Our breed standard indicates that a Weimaraner is “a medium-sized gray dog, with fine aristocratic features. He should present a picture of grace, speed, stamina, alertness and balance. Above all, the dog’s conformation must indicate the ability to work with great speed and endurance in the field.”
We think a really great way to show great speed and endurance in the field is to field-trial. Of course, in order to field-trial, we need to breed dogs who are capable of competing in the sport.
Barrett Weimaraners has the ultimate goal of breeding a Dual Champion Weimaraner, the title of which is earned once the same dog has completed both his show and field championship. It’s a big deal because in the history of our breed, there are just a handful of them who exist (because it’s a very hard thing to do), and we’re working to be someday added to the list.
Below is a highlight reel of recent accomplishments from our field trial dogs. Click here for a primer on what field trials are, and why we think they’re important.
9/2/2017: BoulderMan Barrett (out of our very first 2013 Max x Friday litter) is now QUALIFIED FOR NATIONALS, baby. Boulder on only his second time out as a broke dog earned a pretty sweet SECOND PLACE ribbon in the Open Gun Dog Stake (21 starters!!!) at the Sahuaro Brittany Club Field Trial. Not gonna lie. Holly saw me cry. THANK YOU FOR MY BABY BOY. Boulder was expertly handled by his BFF, Terry Chandler of Rugerheim Kennels, and scouted by Curt Cress. Thankful also for the rest Team Boulder for taking such good care of him this summer: Phil, John, and Gereth ❤️
9/2/2017: Even Steven (CH Trax Edenrock One Night Stand x Reiteralm Legacy Von Trax) is my other young boy from Shirley/Trax Weimaraners. I knew immediately that when I saw his mother, Feist, running at the field trials that someday, I wanted to own one of her kids. I spent the next year pretty much BEGGING Shirley Nilsson in Canada for one of these puppies, and eventually, down came Steven!!! Spring 2017 found us many-a-times at the local Prado Regional Park swimming in the pond (this kid’s a natural swimmer), or training with birds in one of the fields. In September 2017, Steven made his Field Trial debut and came home with a Third Place ribbon in Open Puppy from the Sahuaro Brittany Club, and a Fourth Place ribbon in Open Puppy from the Desert GSP Club. Yay Steven!!! Sister from another mister also ran in OP both days, but didn’t place.
9/2/2017: Cowboy was “Orange Boy” out of the 2016 Boulder x Seren litter. My “pick of the litter,” I sent him to Holly in Autumn 2017, so I could buy myself some more to figure out where I wanted to put him. Well, whaddayaknow?! It turns out that Holly and John’s house was where he belonged. 🙂 In September 2017, Barrett’s Knight-Time Rock n’ Roll Cowboy, “Cowboy,” came home with a pretty nice Second Place ribbon in Open Puppy (with 12 starters). A month later, he finished his show championship by going Best of Breed over Specials from the 12-18 dog class. Next up: training for the field trials.
To date, we’ve owned and/or bred ten (10) dogs who have earned a total of 38 field trial placements. Currently, seven (7) Barrett puppies are actively working towards the field trial circuit:
GCHB Knight n’ Barrett’s Pioneer Mountain Man (DOB 6/2/2013) – Boulder Man Barrett was my Pick Dog out of the 2013 Max x Friday litter. From the time he was four weeks old, I knew this kid was special. In 2014, he earned his show Championship with three Majors in just six weekends out. A day shy of his first birthday, Boulder went off to Summer Camp with Terry Chandler, Sr. In May 2015, Boulder came home for awhile to make an appearance at his show Futurity. One week before his second birthday, he picked up his first BEST OF BREED ribbon at the Mission Circuit under Judge Clay Coady. In July 2015 Boulder earned his bench Grand Championship as well the First Place Senior Futurity Dog ribbon at the Western Futurity and Maturity in Portland, Oregon. In August 2015, with six breed wins under his belt in 2.5 months, Canine Chronicle had him listed as the #18 show Weimaraner. In September 2015 Boulder was ranked # 5 on the WCA Continuous Derby list, and then in December 2015, Boulder picked up a nice Third Place ribbon at the WCA National Field Futurity in Ardmore, OK. In July 2016, Boulder WON the 2016 WCA Western Best Dog in Maturity ribbon. In September 2017, Boulder earned a very nice Second Place ribbon in the Open Gun Dog class (with 21 starters) at the Sahuaro Brittany Club Field Trial. This was only his second weekend out as a broke dog! Boulder is owned and loved by me when he is at home. At the shows, he is exclusively handled by Robert Scott. When on the road running the field trial circuit, he’s on the Rugerheim string. Note: Boulder is currently on the road with Terry Chandler/Rugerheim Kennels. We expect to see him again this winter in Ardmore, OK at the 2017 WCA National Field Trial. Boulder’s pedigree can be viewed here.
CH Barrett’s Lady Grey (DOB 4/15/2014) – Gracie was “Lilac” out of the 2014 Max x Friday litter and, when at home, lives with her mamma Erin and sister Bug. When on the road, she hangs out with Terry Chandler, Sr. and her brother, Boulder. In April 2015, Gracie became the first-ever Barrett dog to be field pointed by winning an Open Puppy stake at a Northern New Mexico Brittany Trial. In April 2015, Gracie picked up another Puppy Point with her First Place ribbon at the WCA Western Classic in Madras, Oregon. In December 2015, she earned a Second Place ribbon in the Open Derby stake. Two months later, Gracie WON the Open Derby stake at the WCA Western Classic, giving her all four juvenile points towards her Field Championship. She enters the broke dog stakes Autumn 2016 only needing 6 points to finish. Oh, and Gracie is also a Show Champion. Gracie is currently the only show- and field- pointed Barrett dog, Erin and I have very high expectations for little Miss Gracie!!! Gracie’s pedigree can be viewed here.
GCH Barrett n’ Star’s Flying Spectacle (DOB 10/8/2014) – Bug was “LadyBug” out of the 2014 Torque x Friday litter (yeah, we really did go there), and lives with Erin and Gracie. I have a special place in my heart for this one because not only is she the spitting image of Mamma Friday in the face, but she has Friday’s dark coat, too (which I really like). Bug is a half-sister to Boulder and Gracie and also trains exclusively with Terry Chandler. In September 2015, Bug and Erin made their debut in the ring together. In November 2015, Bug earned her Novice Shooting Ratings title! In December 2015, we took her to Ardmore, and Bug competed in the first-ever Walking Puppy stake at the WCA Field Trial. No ribbons, but lots of applause for being part of the inaugural group. In February 2016, Bug WON the 2016 WCA Western Classic Field Futurity, and in July, she followed that up with a Fourth Place in Intermediate Bitch ribbon in the 2016 WCA Western Futurity/Maturity.
Touchstone n’ Barrett’s Autobot Moonracer (DOB 8/8/2015) – LunaBot was Purple Girl out of the 2015 Project Mika Autobot litter. In December 2015, Luna traveled over 2,500 miles (with littermate brother Turbo) to see her biological dad (2xNFC/FC ERBENHOF SnS BOOGIE WOOGIE BO) compete in Ardmore, OK at the 2015 WCA NAtional Field Trial. In April 2016, while still under the car of Carlos and Jana, Luna earned a perfect score in her NAVHDA Natural Ability test with Carlos. So far, Luna’s biggest asset is that she has a lot of point. Now, we’re looking to see if she has any run. This season, Luna is in training with Firestorm Bird Dogs/Warren Eizman in Anza, CA. Luna’s pedigree can be viewed here.
Touchstone n’ Barrett’s Autobot Villain (DOB 8/8/2015) – Ticon was Orange Boy out of the 2015 Project Mika Autobot litter. In January 2016, we began putting him on birds to get him ready for Puppy Stakes at the local field trials. In February 2016, Ticon was entered in his first field trial stake and did a respectable job. A couple months later, he earned a Prize I (110) in the NAVHDA Natural Ability test with Halit. That summer, Ticon spent Summer Camp with Kim Sampson in Utah. In late Autumn, Ticon was sent to Diane/AlphaDog and made an appearance at the 2016 National Field Trial in Ardmore. Ticon came home with a Third Place ribbon in the Open Derby! In January 2017, Diane steered him to a First Place ribbon in the Open Derby stake at the Grand Canyon Brittany Club in Arizona. A month later, Ticon earned a Fourth Place ribbon in the Open Derby stake at the 2017 WCA Western Classic. He also picked up a Second Place in his Field Futurity. These days, he’s with Diane Vater and Chuck Cooper at Summer Camp in the UP. Ticon’s pedigree can be viewed here.
Touchstone n’ Barrett’s Autobot Smokescreen (DOB 8/8/2015) – Turbo was Yellow Boy out of the 2015 Project Mika Autobot litter. It was clear from the get-go that this boy was special. In October, he left the nest to stay with Erin and Bug up in the mountains. In December, he traveled over 2,500 miles (with littermate sister Luna) to see his biological dad (2xNFC/FC ERBENHOF SnS BOOGIE WOOGIE BO) compete in Ardmore, OK at the 2015 WCA NAtional Field Trial. In April 2016, he earned a Prize III in the NAVHDA Natural Ability test with Garret. Turbo is a two-time NWA Open Derby winner, and is also Winner of the 2016 WCA Western Field Futurity. Ticon is being exclusively trained and handled by Diane Vater of Alpha Dog Kennels in PA. Turbo’s pedigree can be viewed here.
Trax Even Steven (DOB 11/26/2016) – Even Steven (CH Trax Edenrock One Night Stand x Reiteralm Legacy Von Trax) is my young boy from Shirley/Trax Weimaraners.
