The Six Month Wait for a Barrett Weimaraner Puppy

May 14, 2016

The Six Month Wait for a Barrett Weimaraner Puppy

Question: I’m interested in getting a puppy. How long should I expect to be on the wait list?

Answer: About 6-12 months.

To elaborate, there aren’t a lot of active reputable Weimaraner breeders in Southern CA, but there ARE plenty of folks looking for puppies.

www.barrettweimaraners.com - 2016-01-11 - Bug - Movement 01

We’re your average neighbors. We have spouses, mortgages, car payments, and lots and lots of dogs. (And backyard chickens.) To make ends meet, we have full time day jobs . In short, we don’t “breed dogs for a living.” We don’t own a kennel or “have a facility.” Our dogs are first and foremost members of the family and live in the house with us.

Ownings dogs, doing fun things with them, and occasionally breeding them, is just what we happen to do in our spare time… As a hobby.

Not having unlimited time or space to keep a lot of dogs means we can’t be pumping out puppies all the time.

Every breeding is carefully planned so that we can perpetuate the next generation of outstanding dogs. As puppies grow and develop, they’re constantly being evaluated. At some point in time (8 weeks of age, 10 weeks of age, 12 weeks of age, etc.) we have enough data to decide where they should go. Is this one destined for a hunting home? A breeding home? A pet home?

In every litter, about 50% of puppies end up in performance homes (hunting, field trialing, showing, agility, etc). That means only 3-4 puppies out of a particular litter are going to pet homes; Not a lot.

…

To those who are looking for a well-bred Weimaraner puppy:

We wish it were a quicker process. On behalf of Weimaraner breeders everywhere, we apologize. There just simply aren’t enough of us. (And we’re looking to change that by bringing in new people to the sport of dog competition.) To that end, for those of who you who might be “open” to the idea of owning a performance dog, whether it’s for show, hunt, or field, please get in touch with us and we can let you know what it takes. Bottom line, our goal is to have our puppies placed in the best homes we can find for them. Best wishes on your journey.

Cheers! – Kim and Stacy

    Dear Kim!

I am an interested and VERY patient candidate for Weim Puppy owner. I understand from your post it will take a long time to actually get a puppy, and it does make a lot of sense. May I please ask you if it is realistic though to get a puppy this year, 2018? The month does not matter to me, just want to know if possible in 2018?

    Thank you and kind regards,
    Victoria

Hi Kim, I have searched breeders all over and I really feel like you are the perfect type of breeder. I’ve been researching for so long and I just wanted to know for sure I wasn’t trying to get a dog from a type of puppy mill. Although I’d love a puppy I also saw the 2 year old Blaise and I think I might be more interested in him. I sent an email earlier today, but I was just so excited about Blaise I wanted to send another message so you know how much I really am serious. I hope to hear from you soon.
    Thank you much

We lost our beautiful and beloved Abby after over 10-1/2 years of joy and crazy. She crossed the Rainbow Bridge a month ago after a (gratefully) short illness. We let her tell us she was ready, and will love her forever.

We would love to have another female – our hope is a smaller, the one who is the smallest in the litter. She will be loved, for her lifetime (no matter how many tables or first edition books she may consume!

I am currently looking for a Weimaraner puppy. I lost my girl 8-12/20. So I would like another female for companionship. Thank You
