Hello, prospective Barrett puppy owners! Now that you’re officially on the list for a puppy, and we’ve made it past the ultrasound round, here’s a summary of what to expect, next.
Wait Another Month. Between the ultrasound (done about halfway through pregnancy) and the moment of birth, it’s a waiting game. Just like in humans, projected birth dates are only estimates and puppies may come a few days early or a few days late.
If you haven’t met with us in person yet, now would be a good time! It’s not mandatory for us to get together (especially with the pandemic hovering over our lives) but we generally like to get to know everyone who might want a puppy from us. You can take a day trip to Tehachapi, CA any weekend that we’re home to see us at the house, or we’re happy to meet with you somewhere along our travels through Los Angeles, Orange County, or San Diego. Once puppies arrive, we lock down the house and guests can’t come back again until puppies are about 5-6 weeks old.
King x Gracie puppies (two boys and two girls) arrived on July 30th
Stella is still pregnant with Boulder puppies – Due August 2020
Get the Arrival Announcement. The Arrival Announcement will come out via email about 24-48 hours after puppies are born and we’ve done the head count to see how many boys and girls we have. This is where we have a big pause moment and ask you to tell us whether or not you really only want a girl, really only want a boy, or don’t have a strong preference. This impacts whether or not we think we’ll have a puppy out of this particular available for you. It is during this exchange that we’ll share with you one of three options:
- We definitely have a puppy lined up for you (barring any unforeseen circumstances) and we’ll know which puppy it will be after everyone is tested (temperament, ability, and structure) at seven weeks of age
- We might have a puppy lined up for you, we will know for certain (and which one it will be if we do) after puppies are tested
- We don’t think we have enough puppies in this litter for you to have one, but we’ll move you to the next litter and try again, or if you prefer, connect you with another breeder that might have their next litter available before ours
If you’ve made it this far, we’ve had a good sized liter, and you’re open to either a boy or a girl, chances are very likely that you’ll get a puppy out of this litter. We just won’t know which puppy it will be because that is all dependent on temperament testing results at seven weeks. For extra credit, here’s an article you can read about temperament testing.
Get Prepared. The following eight weeks should include a lot of preparation on your end. There’s an entire list of things for you to read up on, do, buy, etc., here. We will also be sending over a draft Puppy Purchase Agreement during this time for you to review and sign.
Follow Us. Anne, Erin, and I (your three co-breeders for the litters this Summer) will be logging a daily micro-journal of your puppy’s development. The posts will be put up at www.facebook.com/trailingfriday/ and copied over to a summary post on the Barrett Weimaraners website.
Visit Us. We’ll start hosting some Open Houses when puppies are about six weeks old. This would be a good time to meet with the litter, ask us any follow-up questions, and get yourself pysched for the last two weeks or normalcy in your house. 🙂 We’ll also finalize at this meeting when you’ll come back to pickup your puppy to bring him/her home.
