Exercising a Weimaraner Puppy

August 19, 2021

Exercising a Weimaraner Puppy

Weimaraner puppies are very active and need to burn off their energy with high-speed activities. For the uninitiated, “walks a few times a day” does absolutely NOTHING to deplete a Weimaraner puppy’s energy reserve.

Think of your puppy as a grenade with a 12-hour timer on it. If it’s been 12 hours and you haven’t taken him out for some intense, calorie-burning fun, expect that grenade to go off, and when it does your sweet little puppy turns into a Chucky doll. Complete with biting, drawing blood, back-talking, and otherwise being a little hellion.

So what’s a Weimaraner puppy owner to do?!

  • Physical exercise. Find a nearby neighborhood park, secluded hiking trail or other off-leash area where you can safely let your dog run around for 30-45 minutes, at least 3-4 days a week. During this time, feel free to teach your dog fetch so he can sprint after a Chuck-it ball. Make sure his heart rate stays up for this period of time. For those who have access to a swimming pool, swimming is also a FANTASTIC way to exercise a Weimaraner. Use your NextDoor app to see if any of your neighbors are also raising a puppy and if so, get everyone together for some puppy play dates.  Puppy wrestling also works wonders to tire a puppy out.
  • Mental exercise. Give your puppy some enrichment toys, give him some obedience drills, and teach him a few tricks. Another fun thing you can do is to work on your dog’s AKC Novice Trick Dog title.

A tired Weimaraner is a happy Weimaraner. Best wishes.
