Our 7th year at the WCA National Field Trial was another fun year. For the first year, #thebarrettcollective had a dog entered in every stake:
- National Field Championship: TURBO
- National Field Futurity: SIERRA and TALON
- Amateur Field Championship: TURBO
- National Open Derby: TALON
- National Open Walking Puppy: SILVER and LINCOLN
SIERRA also brought home a 3rd Place Ribbon for her performance in the National Field Futurity Stake
As always, the week was full of teamwork and camaraderie, with everyone in attendance genuinely supportive of one another. Here’s what a few friends had to say about the week:
The 2021 WCA National Championship is over. This is always a fun time with good friends, gray dogs and great memories. Thank you to everyone that worked hard to make the trial a success!! Thank you to the dog wagon, cooks (the food was great!), the bird planter, the judges for your time in the saddle, and everyone else who volunteered! A little late getting this post up. It was a heck of a week and I’m just now getting to sharing with friends. I wanted to thank all of the participants and all of the support at the Weimaraner Club of America – National Field Championship in Ardmore this past week. My dog Graf took second place in the Open Championship with Sean Van Kooten handling and me scouting him. Also a special shout out to Jon and Jessica and all of the Perfection Kennel team. Special thanks to Sean Van Kooten for handling this dog. Also Bryan Reynolds for being our inspiration leader. Also special thanks to our judges Chris Corliss and Sherry Ebert who did an outstanding job. We have a special group of friends in the field trial family. These bonds are stitch together buy the common love for these Gray Dogs and horses in the spirit of competition and betterment of the breed. – Thomas Koehler

A year later, this still rings true. Aside from the fact that I missed a lot of it myself due to work, I am blessed by having great friends and extended family to help and fellowship with. [2020 – I made it home from the WCA national field championship a little earlier. As I was driving home I reflected on the experience. Not necessarily the placements and the performance of each of my dogs but rather the whole experience. Running and or scouting 6 dogs is exhausting. Frankly I don’t know how the pros do it. While I was completely exhausted each day, the fellowship at days end made it all worth it. Old friends and new ones gathering together each evening to share stories and enjoy each other’s company is what will grow our sport in the years to come. As I drove, I realized that just a few years ago those visiting around the trailer only consisted of a modest few. The people make the sport. It may take great dogs but happy and willing owners makes it happen. I thought about those in recent past talking about how the sport is dying and others who bring up local clubs closing down or shrinking. Every trial I have attended over the last few years and especially this year have been full or very close. If the local club is struggling or shut down, maybe some folks need to look in the mirror. The San Antonio club is thriving. Why??? The people! We welcome new people with open arms. And guess what…attitudes are contagious. I want to congratulate all who ran. Yes ran. You made it there and that’s a big deal in and of itself. Safe travels to each of you and I hope to share grub, drinks and stories with you and and few more next year.] – Bryan Reynolds
