FROM THE MAILBOX:
“I know that Weimaraners are a hunting dog; most breeders that I have looked into have required me to enroll my dog into a hunting program. Although I wouldn’t mind the experience and adventure… it’s really not my thing. Is this mandatory?”
Answer.
The Weimaraner has evolved over time, just like everything else. Yes, it is currently a hunting dog. No, you don’t have to hunt in order to own one.
Breeders spend a lifetime honing their craft, and there are some out there (hey Timberdoodle! 😘) who will only sell to hunting homes. That’s okay; we need those breeders in our universe to maintain a line of Weimaraners who are proven hunting dogs. Others will only sell to show homes; that’s okay too!
Our best advice is to choose a breeder who you are comfortable with, and who is willing to sell some of their puppies to companion homes; they’re out there. 😉 And then… be patient, because it’ll take awhile.
We breed to improve on what we have. So, it’s silly to think that every single puppy out of every single litter will make it into a show home, a hunting home, an agility home, etc.
There are puppies in every Barrett litter that we let go to companion homes, whether it be at 8 weeks, 12 weeks, 6 months, 2 years, etc. There is no co-ownership requirement, and no strings attached. Just take good care of your dog, and we’re all set.
What’s more important is the families our puppies go home to. Some of our BEST families are “pet” families; those who love and cherish their dogs as family, who incorporate them into their lives fully and completely. Those dogs may never see a game bird or step into a show ring, but they’ve logged thousands of miles on fishing trips, camping getaways, weekend hikes, and lakeside swims.
MEET BRITTA.
She’s our first Weimaraner. She’s eleven years old now. She’s been on only one or two hunts in her life. But she excels at running on the beach, riding in cars, and bossing the others in the house.
Britta joined the family when we were simply looking for a companion. ❤️Unfortunately, she’s not cut out for much else. 🤷🏻♀️ She doesn’t have a single participation ribbon. Or a tenth place trophy.
But we love her. 😊
And you’ll love yours, too.
