Barrett Weimaraners is pleased to announce the arrival of puppies out of Brooksburg’s Right as Rain JH NSD NAVHDA NA 112, “Wiley,” and Barrett’s Independence Inn, “Sookie.” Five boys and three girls arrived early in the day on November 29th. Mom and babies are all doing well!
Thursday November 26th. With a short week, our regular veterinarian wasn’t able to get us in for a prenatal x-ray, so unfortunately, there is no head count beyond the “3-5 puppies” found in the week four ultrasound. Based on the size of her belly, we’re anticipating a good sized litter and are hopeful that we can accelerate the timing of when a few families on our wait list can bring a Barrett puppy home. The calendar is cleared for the weekend in anticipation of their arrival.
Sunday November 29th. Phase one labor only last a few hours. Sookie was restless in the afternoon, and by evening had taken to pacing back and forth in our guest bedroom (where we whelp all of our litters). The first puppy arrived at 9:24 PM. She was little and perfect. Following tradition, she was given the pink collar after we got her dry and warm. It had been a rough few days for us and I was exhausted, so I slipped off to bed around 10:00 AM and husband Barry whelped six more puppies until about 3:00 AM. Once Sookie settled down, fed her kids, and went to sleep herself, Barry crawled into bed for the night. I got up around 6:00 AM, did a head count (yep, still seven puppies!) and went downstairs to start the day. At 7:00 AM, we were holding steady at four boys and three girls, so I sat down to start sending out some emails. To my surprise, when I did the 8:00 AM head count, there was an extra boy in the mix. He was still wet, so I knew he had just arrived. Here are the stats:
- 9:24 PM – Pink Girl – 12.2 ounces
- 10:45 PM – Green Boy – 14.8 ounces
- 11:08 PM – Red Boy – 14.3 ounces
- 11:52 PM – Black Boy – 12.3 ounces
- 12:48 AM – Yellow Girl – 12.2 ounces
- 1:51 AM – Purple Girl – 13.7 ounces
- 2:25 AM – White Boy – 14.5 ounces
- 3:00 AM – Barry assumed Sookie was done and went to bed
- 8:00 AM – Blue Boy – 15.7 ounces
Below are a few photos from this afternoon!
Note: Between Mondays and Thursdays I leave the house around 6:00 AM and don’t return home again until around 7:00 PM. Barry takes care of all the dogs and puppies while I’m at work. This Thursday, I am also departing for Oklahoma (Field Trial Nationals!!!), and won’t be back home again until mid-December. The next update will come when the puppies are about 2.5 weeks old. Photos will be uploaded here as they become available.
Saturday December 26th. Hi all. Apologies for the slow check-in. I came home from Oklahoma earlier in the month very, very sick. I don’t have COVID, but a trip to the Hospital ER right before Christmas resulted in a diagnosis of pneumonia. I’m back at home and recovering, but have had almost zero energy to do much. Husband Barry is taking care of the puppies in my down time, and he’s doing a great job! The kiddos are four weeks old now, and they’ve been moved downstairs to be “part of the action.” Puppies can see and hear now, so we’re acclimating them to loud noises; football on the television, the dishwasher, our other barking dogs, etc. Mamma Sookie is doing a great job with them, and everyone is thriving. Below, a few photos from yesterday. Enjoy!
Thursday December 31st. Puppies are growing!!! They’re officially moved into their “puppy pen,” complete with grade separation to delineate where they should be sleeping, and where they should be pottying (this is an important step that will lead right into potty training). They’re also now getting weaned onto real puppy food. We also have a fresh bucket of water stuck into the corner of their pen, so they have access to a drink anytime they want. Mamma Sookie still takes care of them, climbing into their pen to check in on them and also (occasionally) feed them. We’ve introduced the crate, which everyone loves to sleep in. Next week, we’ll be shutting the door so the puppies learn the concept of being confined.
Saturday January 9th. Puppies are growing and learning everyday. Below are some photos of them before and after dinner!
Monday January 11th. At this age, getting puppies away from their littermates is a great thing. Here’s Green Boy, who is REALLY enjoying some 1:1 television cuddle time!
Friday January 15th. The husband is also spending some 1:1 time with puppies on his lap. New owners should be aware that new puppies will all go home expecting to be lap dogs. 🙂
Breeding Goals. The purpose of this out-breeding (COI over ten generations is low at 6.65%) is to preserve an athletic, quick, ground-covering hunting Weimaraner with a friendly disposition, compact size, and excellent endurance.
The best puppies out of this litter are expected to do very well in AKC field trials. As personal hunting or companion dogs, we expect them to be active, loyal, and family-oriented.
More about Sookie. Sookie was “Pink Girl” out of the 2016 Rossi x Mika litter. My “pick of the litter,” Sookie ended up with friends and neighbors, the Robertson family, who also own Marshall out of the 2016 Royce x Seren litter. Sookie is gifted with a long nose, staunch point, and 12 o’clock tail. She’s also extroverted; friendly and snuggly with everyone she meets. In 2018, Terry Chandler of Rugerheim Kennels piloted Sookie to a Fourth Place ribbon at the Western Classic and Field Futurity. At home, Sookie is quiet, affectionate, obedient, and GREAT with her human siblings; one is a toddler and the other is an infant.
9/1 UPDATE: No inquiries, please. Families currently on the interest list for a Wiley x Sookie puppy have been notified of the litter’s upcoming arrival. Additional families on the wait list for a Barrett puppy will be notified if we end up with a larger-than-expected litter. For those interested in a future Barrett puppy, please feel free to check out our other planned breedings and submit a prospective owner questionnaire if there’s a litter you might be interested in getting a puppy from. Thank you!
